Test 15 – Tax Planning

The purpose can be documented using invoices and receipts. In most cases, a cancelled check or credit card statement isn’t enough to substantiate the purpose. In some cases, there isn’t enough information on the receipt to document a deductible purpose. In that case, it is a good idea to keep a copy of promotional material explaining the expenditure. (I am helping with an audit where an agent is proposing to disallow deductions for a business coach despite a letter of explanation from the coach and having invoices to document the expenses!)

Test 14 – Tax Law Changes

Negotiations that broke off earlier this week on legislation to make technical corrections in the 1986 tax law were on again today, reviving prospects for final action before Congress’s expected adjournment on Friday. The Senate Finance Committee issued a brief statement this evening saying that Senate negotiators had received a ”serious proposal” from their House counterparts that should be ”seriously considered. House and Senate tax committee aides declined to divulge details of the House proposal. The major sticking point in reaching a compromise has been a provision in the House bill that would repeal the ”completed contract accounting method” used by many defense contractors to defer part of their taxes until completion of a contract. The provision is one of several large revenue-raisers contained in the House bill to offset costs to the Treasury for a variety of tax breaks that are included in the technical corrections measure.t

Test 12 – Market and Investment Updates

A thriving real estate investor or retailer solves a lot of other people’s problems; that’s how you become successful. The more knowledge, ability, experience, contacts, and resources you have, the more solutions you can begin to offer people in solving their problems. In addition to this, you will be ahead of the pack if you can get people calling or coming to you with their specific problem first. That means you have to advertise the fact that you are in a position to help while being fair, trustworthy, and accurate in making quick decisions before the competition tries to persuade these people first. For the above reason alone — competition — you will need to understand marketing. That means deciding on what you are going to specialize in, developing a method to define your target audience, and then attracting them with a well-written message using the different types of media to get the word out.

Sports, Arts, & Entertainment

A generation ago, the only financial goal for a superstar African-American athlete at the peak of his career — beyond a large contract — was to nab a lucrative endorsement deal with a big sneaker company like Nike or a national brand such as McDonald’s. The idea was to earn several million extra dollars before his skills began to wane. Those short-term goals remain, but today, many in the National Basketball Association or the National Football League want something more substantial — like a long-term piece of the action. “In my marketplace, everybody wants to be on television, everybody wants endorsements. To me, that’s superficial because it’s temporary,” said Bill Duffy, president of BDA Sports Management, the firm that represents NBA superstars like Chinese center Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets and Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets. He cited pro football’s dancing wide receiver Icky Woods and bulked-up William “The Refrigerator” Perry as examples of stars that cashed in with a quick payday in the 1980s, and then disappeared from the scene.

Test 11 – Retail & Franchising

‘In business for yourself, but not by yourself,’ is one of the many advantages and mantras of franchising. In addition to the comprehensive training programs, proven business systems and support services that franchisors provide franchisees with, encouraging and fostering franchisee-to-franchisee communication can also benefit individual franchisees and thus, the strength and growth of the franchise organization as a whole. Both new franchisees and experienced franchisees within the network reap the rewards that franchisee-to-franchisee communication offers. Whether the topic of conversation is competitors, market conditions, or customer service, no one can relate better, to the unique issues and accomplishments that franchisees face, than their fellow franchisees. Franchisee-to-franchisee communication builds camaraderie, is extremely validating and creates opportunities for sharing strategies for success that can ultimately help the entire organization grow and thrive.

Test 10 – Real Estate and Construction

Big plans and big city mayors seem to go together. But this November’s mayoral race in San Francisco is filled with candidates of small ideas when it comes to urban design and planning. In all of American politics, there is perhaps no elected official mightier than a mayor. Mayors, particularly mayors of large cities, wield a disproportionately large stick compared to their gubernatorial, legislative, or congressional brethren. Big city mayors can dispense patronage, influence budgets, and notably, direct the form and shape of development, building, and construction. In the thick of the campaign, the American Institute of Architects invited the eleven major candidates for mayor of San Francisco to debate their respective visions for the City by the Bay. In attendance were former Supervisors Tony Hall and Michaela Alioto-Pier, City Attorney Dennis Herrera, current Mayor Ed Lee, and Supervisor David Chiu. No shows were Public Defender Jeff Adachi, Supervisor John Avalos, former Supervisor Bevan Dufty, venture capitalist Joanna Rees, Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting, and State Senator Leland Yee.
